Weight Loss Diets: Which is the Best One?

Now that spring has come many people have the same resolutions - exercising and losing weight!  They want to get back in shape after hiding their figure under a coat throughout the winter.

There are many kinds of diets, from the most "reasonable" ones to the "weirdest" ones. They can be classified into 4 main groups: protein diets, dissociated diets, popular diets and balanced diets.

In protein diets, usually no carbohydrate-rich food is taken, that is to say, they don’t include bread, rice, pasta, legumes, cereals… However, you can eat however much protein and even fat you like.  This leads to an energy deficit which makes the dieter feel weak, irritable, dizzy… Moreover, it is highly likely that cholesterol levels, among others, will rise.

Another diet group is that of dissociated groups, which consist in not mixing certain food groups. For example, you cannot have carbohydrates and proteins in the same meal. The authors of these diets have the idea that the digestive system is not ready to process different kinds of food at the same time. This idea has no scientific basis, and dieters usually lose weight out of the boredom caused by these eating guidelines.

As for popular diets, there are many kinds. Some are based on eating a certain specific food for an entire day (pineapple, salvia syrup, artichoke, cucumber...) Other popular diets are associated with celebrities, doctors or clinics which sometimes don’t even exist.  They are usually very monotonous and easily dropped.

Popular diets lead initially to a fast loss weight, as body water is lost, but the weight comes back easily (and even more weight). Also, they don't promote a balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle. Losing way in a correct way equals losing fat, and this can be achieved by means of the balanced diets which I will now describe.

Unlike “miracle diets”, balanced diets include a wide range of all kinds of food. They also meet daily nutritional needs, and so dieters do not go hungry and can achieve optimal physical and mental health. Moreover, they ensure a correct weight loss – that is to say, fat is lost, not muscle, and thus long-term weight loss is much easier. Choose balanced diets, as they are the most advantageous ones.
